SICILY. Gela. Circa 450-440 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 29 mm, 17.50 g, 4 h). Charioteer, holding reins in his right hand and kentron in his left, driving quadriga moving slowly to right; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses; in exergue, palmette with volutes. Rev. CEΛΑΣ Forepart of the river-god Gelas, in the form of a man-headed bull, to left. BMC 40 (same dies). HGC 2, 343 var. Jameson 584 (same dies). Jenkins, Gela, 363 (O71/R146). Attractively toned and with an impressive river-god. Struck from a somewhat worn obverse die and with minor marks, otherwise, very fine.
